President Biden has recently signed a memorandum that condemns racism against Asian American Pacific Islander, which has spiked in the past year due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The memorandum aims to protect the AAPI community against hate crimes and acts of racism. It urges the attorney general to work with local agencies to expand data collection and work towards preventing it. Furthermore, it asks organizations to avoid using racially discriminatory language in reference to the pandemic. AAPI community leaders have reacted to the memorandum favorably and have breathed a sigh of relief. Acts of vandalism against Asian restaurants and institutions have been on the rise in the past year, as well as violent hate crimes against people of Asian descent, so this memorandum is a good first step in the right direction.
