Whether or not she wins, Angel Lama has already made history by becoming the first transgender woman to become a finalist at the Miss Universe Nepal contest. She is competing against 17 other contestants in hopes of representing Nepal in the global Miss Universe Pageant. The 21-year-old finalist has stated that she joined the contest in order to show people how diverse society has become and aims to advocate for the transgender community. Throughout her upbringing, she often hung out with girls and played with dolls and Barbies. She was bullied in school for being attracted to boys, ultimately resulting in her dropping out of college. However, she has regained her courage since then and at the age of 16, received reproductive surgery. She was recruited to the pageantry business in 2018 after working in the LGBT+ rights group Blue Diamond Society and was crowned Miss Pink Nepal.
