According to the results of a Gallup poll that surveyed 1,381 Americans between June 1, 2021 and July 5, 2021, it was found that Americans’ satisfaction towards the treatment of immigrants and Asian Americans in the United States decreased sharply in 2021 due to a year of increased racism and hate crimes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Gallup has polled on the satisfaction of Americans on the way immigrants and Asian Americans have been treated since 2001. 2021 marks the lowest American satisfaction percentage of 33% for the way society treated immigrants, as well as the lowest American satisfaction percentage of 46% for the way Asian people are treated in the United States.
Before 2016, around 70% of Americans were satisfied with how Asians are treated; however, between 2016 and 2020, the percentage dropped 15%. From 2020 to 2021, the percentage declined again from 60% to 46%.
Hate towards people of Asian descent is sadly not new. The realization of the current situation, however, is a first step for the public to start helping Asian communities in the US that are in need.
